Wilmington, NC – November 28, 2017 – Paragon will host this year’s last meeting of the Wilmington Pharma/Bio/CRO Networking Group on November 30, 2017 at 5:30 PM. The event will be held at Ogden Tap Room on Market Street in Ogden, NC.
The networking group offers local leaders in the pharmaceutical industry the opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with the broader clinical research community. Senior Project Manager for Paragon International Margaret Richmond has been a long-time supporter of the networking group. “You’re interested to hear how people’s projects are going and what new drug trials are coming up. There’s a real sense of hope and anticipation in the air. To know that our community supports so much scientific research and innovation is always exciting.”
Chris Matheus started the Wilmington Pharma/Bio/CRO Networking Group in 2011, which continues to hold meetings on the fourth Thursday of every month. Apart from Paragon International, the meetings have also been sponsored by Medidata Solutions, a leader in cloud-based solutions for clinical research, along with PRA Health Sciences and Modoc Research Solutions, two regionally based CROs. Since their first meeting at the now-closed Grand Union Pub, the networking group has bar hopped their way across the Wilmington culinary scene. “It’s one of the first pieces of advice I took,” said Matheus, referring to the group’s tendency to hold meeting at a new bar each month, “we’ve been able to bring our business to a variety of places and raise awareness of our industry among local businesses.”
According to the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, the clinical research cluster in and around Wilmington, NC has grown in recent years. The Cape Fear region now supports 31 CROs—four of which have local headquarters—which represents a nearly 25% growth rate from 2015. The National Institutes of Health currently show 94 active clinical trials based in Wilmington. Most attendees find that the meetings are representative of the region’s diverse pharmaceutical landscape. Mark Aikman, Pharm.D. and VP of Drug Safety and Generic Regulatory Affairs at Osmotica is a regular networking group attendee and appreciates this diversity: “While we do have a very significant CRO presence in Wilmington, there are many other types of pharma-related industries represented in Wilmington from biostatistics to pharma-support industries such as Paragon.” He continued, “It usually leads to interesting conversations,” which is precisely the point for Matheus. When you work in an industry that is so focused on numbers; every now and again, you need to hear a good story.
The next monthly meeting of the Wilmington Pharma/Bio/CRO Networking group will be held on January 25th, 2018. For updates on future events, you can connect with the group on LinkedIn or contact Chris Matheus at chrismatheus1@gmail.com.
